Guess why: Driving on the left.

Can anyone tell me why British / Irish / Australian / Indian, and even Japanese people, drive on the left while most of the world ride on the other side of the road?

Although most of the world drive on the right side of the street, England and other countries (most colonies or former colonies ) makes the left.

The origin of this standard road driving dating from medieval times . By then , the movement was carried on horseback to the left , thus leaving the right hand free rider and to have her fight if .

In addition to the above , there is another possible explanation for this: this custom would be referred to driving carriages. The driver held the reins with his left hand , leaving the right to whip . If driving is not made by the left of the street , whip unintentionally hurt pedestrians who were near the carriage , so that changes in several countries on this side of the street.

When they came out the first motor vehicles , most of the countries returned to driving on the right , as they argued that it was easier to pass drivers with the right gear and the visibility was better. However, England and other states decided to continue their historical tradition.

Curiously, in Western Samoa , located in Oceania , has begun to implement the lane change from right to left . Even though this is rare , it was decided to promote the exchange of cars of this type with Australia and New Zealand , countries that also handled in this way.
